Amsterdam Review

I have a deep love for Amsterdam. This year for my 26th birthday, in August, I went back for the second time for 3 nights and 2 days and had the most amazing time.

Now I think when people think Amsterdam they think sex, drugs and clogs but its so much more than that. And that's what I hope to achieve by sharing this post. The buildings are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen, the people are so friendly and there's a thousand museums you can visit and lots of thing you can do. Plus its a really cheap couple of nights away. Flights and hotel cost around £300, between two and then I took about £350 spending money but it can be done much cheaper if need be. You could literally just spend the day walking around and have an amazing time.

Places I'd recommend

We stayed at Casa 400 hotel which was beautiful and everyone who worked there was very helpful. It had the most amazing roof top bar which over looked the city and it was right by Amstel station so we just got a 2 day metro pass which only cost €12.50. The rooms are a decent size and we payed just over £200 for 3 nights there. They also had a beautiful restaurant there which did a lovely Steak.

Za-Za's is incredible food. I mentioned it was my birthday and they did balloons for the table and printed us a picture afterwards which was such a nice gesture. The only thing I'd say is the food took forever like 30-40 minutes between starter and main course which is a long time. When we asked the ladies who worked there said that it was the dutch way apparently they like plenty of time between courses but we'd ate at other dutch restaurants and there was no long waits. Other guests had complained as well but regardless I'd go back as the food is some of the best I've ever had.

Bar-Beque Castell do they most incredible steaks which were garnished with fruit bizarrely but it kind of worked. Its not your typical restaurant you sit on sofas with other groups of people and eat off of a tray on your lap. The service was really good and I'd go back purely for the incredible T-Bone I had.

Things to do other than get high or visit the red light district:

Canal Cruise: There's loads of different services that offer them. We went on a canal bus so you could stop off where ever you like and we were so lucky with such beautiful weather I honestly could of sat on that canal all day

Go to a park: Because no one in Amsterdam have front or back gardens they have these beautiful parks where people go and enjoy nice weather. We went to Vondel park which was so beautiful and literally everyone from all walks of life where there. You'd have a group of people doing yoga in the park next to a family and then a group of guys listening to rap and then an old couple enjoying an ice cream by some teens playing Pokemon Go. It was such a great atmosphere to be around and the park itself was just beautiful.

Anne Franks Haus: For me a girl obsessed with WW2's history this was always a bucket list place to visit. I remember buying and reading The Diary of Anne Frank when I was about 10 and its the reason I started a diary ( among other things). The tour of the house was over pretty quickly but it was so eerie/fascinating to see and visit. You must prebook your tickets I'd say at least 2 weeks before you go as they sell out fast and you can end up queueing for 3-4 hours.

Museums: As I said there's so many you can go to we went to Joods Historisch museum which was holding 'Amy Winehouse: a family portrait' which actually had its last day today but as a huge Amy fan from the second I heard Back to Black played on Radio 2, I had goosebumps the entire time. It was a lovely little exhibition with unseen pictures of her family life and even some of her clothes and personal effects on display.

Amsterdam Ice Bar: For something on the fun sized I highly recommend visiting Amsterdam's Ice Bar. I'd never been to an Ice Bar before and it was one of the things on my Bucket List. Again it was over very quickly theres only so long you want to spend in a room full of ice but it was good fun and I'm glad I've ticked it off my list.
